“TUMS II” Syllabus
The Mathematics is proud to announce TUMS II: a seminar for graduate students currently teaching. The seminar will meet alternate Thursdays, 1:30-3:00pm in SC 232. The first meeting will be October 20.
Read on to see the syllabus or you can download a printable version of the syllabus (PDF).
Goal
Teaching is a significant component of most mathematicians’
careers. Just as future lawyers and doctors must study and train to
become more proficient in the skills needed in their professional
life, future mathematicians must study and train to improve their
teaching skills. The goal of the Teaching Undergraduate Mathematics
Seminar is to provide opportunities to discuss and reflect on
teaching practices, in order to become better teachers now and to
prepare for the future.
All mathematics graduate students are invited to attend.
Those teaching during the academic year should attend the first
seminar on October 20, and two more of their choice throughout the
academic year.
The Case Method
The seminar will be conducted according to the case
method. Participants will read a fictional story describing a
teaching predicament. The ensuing discussion, though specific
to the case at hand, will uncover important lessons beneficial to
any teacher.
