Forth year graduate student Anand Patel has been awarded the Derek C. Bok
Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching of Undergraduates. He
was recognized especially for the tireless hours he spent teaching,
helping and motivating his students at all levels. The award is given
to 5 graduate students selected from among the many excellent Teaching
Fellows in FAS courses. This is the second year in a row that a
Mathematics Graduate Student has won the award.

5. MIT. Congratulations to our team members, Eric Larson, Evan O'Dorney and
Alex Zhai who win $1000, to Evan O'Dorney for being a Putnam Fellow (a top-five
finisher, with an award of $2,500). Congratulations to Alex
Zhai for finishing amongst the next 18 individuals (and an award of
$250), and to Eric Larson and Allen Yuan for honorable mentions.

Congratulations to Michael Hopkins for the NAS Award for his leading role in the development of homotopy theory,
which has both reinvigorated algebraic topology as a central field in mathematics and
led to the resolution of the Kervaire invariant problem for framed manifolds.

The morning session begins at 10:00 AM and ends at 1:00 PM
The afternoon session begins at 3:00 PM and ends at 6:00 PM.

Please congratulate our team members, Kevin Lee, Arnav Tripathy and Alex
Zhai. Each receives $600. Alex Zhai is a Putnam Fellow, a top-five finisher and carries an award of $2,500.
Congratulations to Iurie Boreico, Eric Larson and Arnav Tripathy for
being among the next ten highest ranking individuals with a prize of
$1000, and congratulations to Sherry Gong for an honorable mention.
We had outstanding individual results, with four students placing into the top 15.

Congratulations to Jonathan Wang, Harvard senior, who was recently
awarded the Churchill Scholarship by the Winston Churchill Foundation
of the United States.
This is a scholarship for a year of post-graduate study and research
in the sciences, engineering and mathematics at the University of
Cambridge. Competition for this Scholarship is rather intense with only fourteen
Scholarships awarded this year.

It is with sadness that we have to announce the death of Dale Winter who
passed away January 5th, 2011. Dale had been a preceptor at the Mathematics
department from 2000 to 2003.
